WHY FAILING MATRIC ISN’T THE END OF THE WORLD

First of all, let me personally congratulate you on making it this far! Matric isn’t everything, it’s important to remember that. You’ve made it through (at least) twelve years of successful schooling to ultimately be here.

According to the South African Department of Education (in a press statement that can be found here), almost half of students who enrol for grade 2 fail to make it to their grade 12 examinations. Thus you’ve surpassed almost half of all learners by simply making it to your matric examinations!

So, CONGRATULATIONS!

As someone who has recently been disappointed by their matric results you need to start considering your options for 2016. Thus along with this blog post from 2015, you have these three main options to consider:

  • Retake the grade 12 examination

You should first consider enrolling for the supplementary examinations which will take place early during 2016. If you feel that you will be well-enough prepared by then, you should definitely enrol for these exams, as it will mean that you receive your matric certificate earlier than all the other options. You will find more information about the supplementary examinations on the Department of Education’s website. Alternatively you can enrol at your local high school for the whole year. This will give you the opportunity to do a more in-depth study of your subjects, while also being thoroughly prepared for the examination in November. You can also enrol at a post-matric school/college that will allow you to do your studies part time, making time for a part-time job and other activities.

  • Enter the job market

If re-enrolling for matric is not an option for you and you want to get started on your career, then this is a great alternative. Because you have no matric certificate or tertiary education, you’re almost guaranteed to start at the bottom in whatever career you wish to pursue. But with hard work and perseverance, you can reach the top too. While it might take you longer to get to the position you want than someone with a tertiary education, you won’t be spending all your time at school and will rather be building up a technical background and sufficient experience.

  • Further your education

Now, let me tell you, contrary to what your parents, your educators, your friends might have been telling you throughout your life: YOU DO NOT NEED MATRIC TO FURTHER YOUR EDUCATION. Institutions, such as College SA, makes it easy for someone without matric to become qualified. These institutions believe that everyone should be given a second chance when it comes to improving themselves and building towards a successful future. This is why so many of their courses are readily available no matter what your skill level or qualification. Some are available as full-time studying courses. Others are available as distance learning courses, where you can study from home, or while you have a full-time career.

I hope that, after reading these options, you do realise that this one failure does not define you. Perseverance is what will ultimately make you as a person and set you on the right track.

No matter which direction you choose to pursue throughout 2016, I am sure that you will succeed in everything you set your mind to.

Entrepreneurship

Very few people want to work for bosses. However few people can afford to be their own boss. It isn’t easy and takes a lot of hard work to become your own boss or to get to the point where you don’t really have one boss, just equals.

entrepreneurship

However there is two ways this can happen, hard work from inside a company or secondly, you could be an entrepreneur and start your own business. Being an entrepreneur requires many things that may seem difficult but at the same time, the requirements seem lacking.

Do you know what qualification you need to start a business? Nothing!

You don’t need a degree you don’t need a diploma or certificate none of that is necessary.

Now a degree or diploma may help if you are starting out and applying for financial aid but there are examples of many great people succeeding without degrees.

A few examples are:

  • Bill Gates

  • Mark Zuckerberg

  • Steve Jobs (When Steve Jobs first dropped out of college he recycled cans to make get by)

Just because these successful people dropped out doesn’t mean that you have too or that you necessarily should. This just goes to show how you don’t need a degree to be successful. Now we know what someone doesn’t need to be a successful entrepreneur let’s look at what he does need.

entrepreneur

The first thing is to do what you enjoy. Starting a business that has the foundation of something you love. This will motivate you to care more about the business and work harder to make sure it is successful; in this regard it is better to focus on passion then just pure money.

However you do need to start a business that will make money and have an income, research all your options thoroughly and make sure you are providing something that consumers want or need. This doesn’t necessarily have to be new but if it is similar to others businesses you need diversity as well as be able to compete with your rivals.

A business is all about the customer, knowing your customer, what they want and how to appeal to your customer. This means that you need to know your target market. The age group of who you appeal to what fluctuations in their income will cause and how this will affect your business.

Also you need to know how to advertise to your target audience. Obviously as the business grows you will hire people to help you with the day-to-day running marketing and so forth of the business but in the beginning when designing the structure of your business you need to know how to appeal to consumers from the beginning.

Finally be organised and delegate.

A business needs to be organised knowing where everything is, is important. Never try to be the sole person in charge of your business you can’t do everything yourself therefore hire people to work for you and delegate responsibilities. These tips should give you a better chance to succeed.

If all else fails there is another solution:

What is kindness NOT?

Hi there everybody,

Kindness is often considered to be a bit of a lame word. Kindness is what ‘sweet’ people do, right? People such as missionaries and social workers are kind, yes?

Well, not actually.

What is kindness not?

Kindness is often under-valued – it’s considered to be mostly just the stuff expressed in those soppy Hallmark cards. How sad is that?

So, if most of us think that kindness is ‘lame’, how do we feel when we personally experience the opposite of kindness?

What are the opposites of kindness?

  • Cruelty
  • Indifference
  • Impatience
  • Intolerance
  • Abuse
  • Ridicule
  • Dishonesty
  • Disrespect
  • The need to punish and make somebody feel bad
  • The need to assert your superiority over somebody so that the other person feels ‘less than’ and insignificant
  • Withholding time, affection, intimacy
  • Not appreciating somebody
  • Not recognising and affirming somebody regarding who they are and what they do

And many more …

Can you see how important kindness really is?  How do we feel when we experience these opposites being done to us?

So, is kindness really that lame? Because it is certainly not lame when we get to experience, first hand, any of the opposites of kindness.

I guess it basically boils down to the age-old proverb of treating others the same way that we want to be treated. That’s kindness.

Our prime purpose in life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.

Kindness for today

Change your Attitude

Today’s post has been written by our awesome guest, Ulf Dieter Koepp. Thank you Ulf for sharing these lovely words.

Change your Attitude:

With things like Matric Results and New Year Resolutions,  people have two choices: flee from problems and disappointments, OR, fight to improve those problems. The human mind is a complex system – and it is so interesting to see how we all react differently to the situations in our lives.

As people, we want our lives to go our way and according to our plans. Well, life doesn’t work that way and things like obstacles, difficulties and unexpected life situations help us to develop and to mature.

We are all looking for solutions to our problems. Often, we expect people or a specific person to solve all our problems for us. In a sense, we are looking for a kind of a ‘Messiah’ to show us the way through our problems.

As part of our human experience, we will all be confronted with situations that are difficult and unpleasant. We might not be able to completely change our situations (some things just cannot be changed). But, we are always able to change our attitudes. Always.

I love this quote from Hellen Keller, whom I admire for her victorious approach over her severe disabilities (being blind and deaf).

This is what she said:

Look at the world straight in the eye

The world is looking for people who can deal with and flourish during difficult times. Are you one of those people?

Change your attitude

You can change your attitude. You can choose to be more positive. You can choose to find meaning in your life.

You are stronger than you think you are!

Your focus determines your reality

Achieving your Goals

All of us have goals in life.

images

Whether you have goals that are small or goals that are big, the fact remains that achieving personal goals is really important.

Some tips on how to achieve your goals:

images (6)

Tip 1: Write down every goal that you have.

images (1)

One of the steps that can lead you toward the road to success is for you to jot down every single goal you have created. Whether what you have is a short term goal or a long term goal, it is essential that you write each one down in a journal or a notebook.

Why?

Well, once you have your goals written down, you tend to become more committed to achieving personal goals that you’ve penned.

images

Goals you have scribbled also mean that you can check on them from time to time. Thus, it is very much unlikely for you to forget all those aims or aspirations. Of course, not forgetting a goal eventually leads to being able to achieve your goal.

Tip 2: Don’t lose sight of goals

images (7)

Always keep yourself focused and motivated – in other words, don’t lose sight of the ‘finish line’. If you don’t concentrate on reaching your aims, how can you expect to be on your way to the road to success? It is best that you check your journal from time to time, or place something on the mirror e.g. a post it, or a photo, or display something on your desk that reminds you of your aspirations; doing that will surely remind you of why achieving personal goals is important.

Tip 3: Pat yourself on the back when you’ve accomplished something.

images (3)

Making it a tradition to celebrate whatever goal you’ve accomplished is part of the strategies of how you can be successful. By knowing how important it is to pat yourself on the back or doing things to reward yourself when you deserve it, you won’t get tired of striving hard to reach goals. For instance, if you were able to cross out one or two things from your list of goals, treat yourself to a new phone, handbag or to a movie as that practice will help you look forward more to journeying on the road to success.

True, achieving personal goals may not be as easy as some people would like to believe. By following these simple tips, though, you’re sure to find it less hard to achieve your goal.

Good luck!
