My Favourite Things

My Favourite Things is a song title from the famous movie “The Sound of Music”. If you have not seen the movie yet, then your life is completely unfulfilled. Originally it was a play, but in 1965 an American film studio made this masterpiece of a film. And I know what you are thinking… a film from 1965? But trust me it is totally worth the watch!

The movie touches upon universal themes of love, family, honour and perseverance. The story is set in Austria during World War II. So you can only imagine how those themes contrasts against the gloomy backdrop of a war.

Watch a clip of the song “My Favourite Things” here:

My Favourite Things
“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favourite things

Cream coloured ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favourite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favourite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favourite things
And then I don’t feel so bad”

The song’s purpose and lesson is to think about all your favourite things when you are scared or sad. This is a valuable life lesson for us in general. When we are stressed, in despair, angry, afraid or feel any negative emotion, we should also think about what makes us happy.

Now I have a task for you. I want you to make a list of all the things that makes you smile and laugh, the things that you are grateful for and things that makes you feel light, hopeful and free. I have given this a lot of thought and made a list myself. I will share with you a few of mine in a moment. This list is something that you should remind yourself of on a daily basis, until you do not even have to think of your list in order to alter your negative thoughts. Just imagine a world where we could prevent unnecessary anger, sadness or irritation. And even just on a personal level, it is nice to remind yourself of all the good things. So here are a few of my favourite things:

• The smell and sound of rain
• The sound of a cat purring
• Gelato’s ice cream
• Cello music
• Hugs
• Potato chips (‘slap’ chips)
• Cats!

Students of College SA, make your lists of favourite things and remind yourself of all the good things in your life, the things that you really enjoy, look forward to or appreciate. There is beauty and hope in reminding ourselves of what is good in our lives. And maybe you would be so bold to share with us some of your favourite things? I would love to hear them!

P.S. Do not forget to see the film The Sound of Music!

7 Quotes to Inspire Success

Let’s face it – we all want to be successful. Sometimes we just need a bit of inspiration to get us to where we want to be.

Here are 7 quotes about success that will inspire you to reach new heights, and achieve more than you ever thought was possible. Let’s start off the weekend on a positive note. Remember – you can do ANYTHING that you put your mind to!

——————————————————————————————————————————

  1. “The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself” – Mark Caine

This quote is about wanting more for your life. Don’t simply accept the life that you were given – we are free to change it at any time. You may live in a poverty-stricken area that is rife with crime. But are you stuck there? No! You can improve your life. Study, get a good job, and refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you find yourself.

  1. “If you want to SUCCEED as bad as you want to BREATHE, then you will be SUCCESSFUL” – Eric Thomas

How badly do you want to be successful? If you really want something – so much so that you are willing to fight for it and work consistently hard for it – then you are sure to get it!

  1. “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up” – Thomas Edison

Don’t give up! The most successful people got to where they are because they persisted. You are so very close to seeing your dreams come true – so keep at it!

  1. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts” – Winston Churchill

Whether you succeed or fail in your endeavours – keep working hard. You can’t simply sit back and do nothing once you have reached your goals. You need to make sure that you don’t lose what you have achieved – otherwise what was the point in all of your hard work?

  1. “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm” – Winston Churchill

Some people fail over and over again before they eventually succeed. The secret is to not let these failures get the better of you. You need to remain positive, and never lose hope. Believe in yourself and believe in your dreams – you will get there!

  1. “It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things” – Leonardo da Vinci

It is very tempting to take the easy way out of situations. We want to be successful, but sometimes we are not willing to work hard to get it. Success is not something that can just fall into your lap. We need to decide what we want from life, and MAKE IT HAPPEN!

  1. “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will” – Vince Lombardi

Successful people are not stronger than us, nor are they smarter than us. So what then sets them apart? How do they become successful? It is quite simple really – they have a WILL to succeed. They WANT to succeed, and so they will! Be determined to reach your goals, and you will.

Students of College SA, we believe in you! Now you just need to believe in yourself. Go out there and show the world what you are made of!

Who You Are

“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and then it will never be used to hurt you.”  – Tyrion Lannister

September will always be the month that we identify with flowers, green leaves and colour. In a poetic sense, spring reminds me of new beginnings, beauty, and being free.

We celebrated women the whole of August, and with spring bringing new life, it reminded me that we should celebrate ourselves. So this September I want each and every one of us to celebrate and embrace who we are!

It does not matter where you came from or where you are at this stage in your life. It does not matter who you were. What truly matters is who you have become. The person you are now is the only one that matters. And let me tell you something about that person:

The person you are deserves to be loved, deserves to be happy, deserves to find hope every day, deserves to laugh – and most importantly – deserves to live life the way you have always intended.

Love, Who You are, College SA, You Deserve Love

But remember – even though you should celebrate and embrace yourself, you should always respect and love the people around you. Just like you, they also deserve all the good things in life.

There will be days when you will be happier and more radiant than someone around you – so share your smile, share your happiness, and let your positivity spread like a wildfire. And when the day comes when you feel a bit blue, I am sure a friend or even a stranger will share their kindness with you too.

Share happiness, Spread hope, friendship, share kindness, College SA

Even though we embrace who we are now, we should never forget where we came from, who we were, or what we went through. There is always a reason for everything. Sometimes a bad thing will happen to you, but you will be moulded by this bad situation and become who you were meant to be.

“When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person that walked in. That is what the storm is all about.” – Haruki Murakami

Tim Fargo said that who you are tomorrow begins with what you do today. So be the person today that you would be proud of if you had to look back tomorrow. Be the person that can say: “This is me” and be content.

Students of College SA, remember who you are and believe in who you want to be. It is spring. Love yourself, listen to the sound of hope that lives within you, and share it!

The Time is Now

“There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” – Nelson Mandela

Live big, College SA

Have you ever looked at your life and wondered why you still do not have the career you wanted, why you aren’t driving a better car or live in a house you always thought you would have by now?

There are many reasons why we “get stuck” in certain stages/phases of our lives. It can be something serious, such as dealing with emotional problems that may stem from a series of things – You might have lost somebody close to you, maybe you were bullied, or maybe you were abused.

Sometimes we are stuck in a career because we do not possess the necessary skills to be promoted, or we cannot afford to buy a new car because we might have other obligations, such as our children’s school fees. Whatever the reason may be that you feel you are not moving forward in life, I have some advice for you.

You might have heard the saying “there is no better time than the present”. I could not agree more. Every so often we tell ourselves the reason why we cannot recover from emotional pain, financial loss, or get a new job is that we feel it is going to take too much work and effort. And yes, it may take a lot of time, work, or effort, but it will be worth it!

It is never too late to become who you were supposed to be, and as the wise Karen Lamb said: “In a year from now you will wish you started today”.

No regrets, College SA

Let go of your past and have the courage to do something that will help you achieve what you were destined to accomplish. So instead of feeling unaccomplished and unhappy in your career, get up and do something about it. Study a course that will help you to get promoted or embark on a new career path. Sometimes the confidence that we receive from a life-changing career is all we need to turn our lives around.

Let go of all the negativity and emotional baggage. The time is now to take back your life! Take back what is yours, and take back what was always supposed to be yours. We all deserve to be happy and live a prosperous life. So make it happen!

That being said, if you want something to happen, you should prepare for it. You should not sit around and wait for something to happen, or wait for somebody to come along and do it for you. No! Look in the mirror and you will see that what you need to succeed is already there. It always was!

“The mental and physical space we create by letting go of things that belong in our past gives us…the option to fill the space with something new.” – Susan Fay West

Unsung Hero

“You can close your eyes to the things you don’t want to see, but you cannot close your heart to the things you don’t want to feel.”  – Johnny Depp

Recently I have been doing some research about the psychological and emotional impact that advertisements have on us as humans.

On a daily basis we will encounter several ads or commercials – whether it is in print, on the radio, or on television. Not all of them will have the same kind of impact or influence – some we won’t even remember seeing, or will not even notice that they are there. But there are a few that truly captures our attention and makes us read, listen or watch with great interest.

I have watched quite a few that made me laugh, cry or think. I would like to share a commercial with you for a Thai Life Insurance company. The commercial is in Thai, but it has English subtitles. Please do take the time to view this extraordinary 3 minute commercial titled Unsung Hero.

The term “unsung hero” can be defined as someone who does great deeds and does not receive any recognition for it. In this commercial, the young man performed numerous acts of kindness, and people frowned upon him. In the end, he did not receive recognition, a medal, money, or a better life. No, he received something far greater. He got to witness happiness!

This commercial really got me thinking about how we live our lives each day. Do we do good or kind things and expect people to do the same for us? Or do we do it selflessly – without any expectations?

So the psychological effect that the commercial had on me was to make me think that we should all live the way the young man in the Thai commercial lives. We should live generously. We cannot always afford to give away half our meal or the money in our wallet. But we can give something of ourselves. We can give a helping hand, a hug, a kind word, or even just a smile. I think we underestimate the power of a simple act of kindness.

We live in a fast-paced world where our only concern is ourselves. We need to stop this mentality. We should care about all people – whether we know them or not.

kindness, help, helping, helping hand, care, caring

Kindness, caring, care, kind, friend

Maybe that casual conversation you had with a stranger is the only form of contact he/she will have that day. Maybe the smile you gave to the person you passed on the street is the only form of friendliness that person has received all day. You see, we can make a big difference in someone else’s life by making small differences in our own.

I know that I am not the only person that feels this way, and I hope that the commercial also touched some of you. I want to witness the happiness in the world. Students of College SA, don’t you?

“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
