Walking in the rain

Image

Two days ago, I woke up to the sound of raindrops against my window. The sun was shining the previous day, so the change in weather was unexpected. I commute to work with the train and immediately I began to think about being at work in wet clothes.

I arrived at work, dripping wet as expected. My colleague asked me why I did not run because if I had run, I would not have been wet. I did not reply. I could not at the time because my mind was all over the place.

The rain represented the storms in our lives and this was an unexpected storm. How many of these unexpected storms do we encounter? We have different ways of facing these storms. Some run from the storm, some walk through the storm and some run through the storm.

Those who run from the storm will not learn the lesson that they were supposed to take from the storm. Those who walk through the storm will become wet and eventually learn from the storm. The lesson from walking through the storm will enable them to face the next phase of life. Those who run through the storm will also become wet but will miss out on some element of the lesson along the way. Yes, they will go through to the next phase but not fully prepared for the next phase because they rushed through the storm.

I thought that whether I walked or ran, there would have been no difference, I still would have been wet, maybe not that much but wet is wet. I still had to walk through the rain to get to work.

Whatever unexpected storm is thrown on our way, we have a choice, either to run from it and learn nothing, run through it and miss out on a opportunity along the way, or walk through it and receive the full opportunity when arriving at our destination.

Sometimes it is necessary to take a walk in the rain and get wet in order to progress to the next phase of life.

Tortoise Power (Yes, really … )

Some of you might know about an old story (or fable) that speaks about a race between a Tortoise and a Hare.

Tortoise and the Hare

The story starts off by introducing us to the Hare (really just a bunny rabbit). The Hare challenges his friend, the Tortoise, to a race.

Everyone predicted that the Hare (I am going to call him The Bunny) would win the race.

Look at the picture below and ask yourself which one of the two would win a speed race:

The race

Any logical person would pick the Bunny to win, right?

Well, the Bunny did NOT win the race. The Tortoise won the race.

Who won the race

How did a tortoise beat a bunny in a race?

This is why the Bunny LOST the race:

  • The Bunny was over-confident even before the race started – he did not even consider the possibility that he might lose;
  • The Bunny was arrogant – he mocked the Tortoise and made other ‘people’ laugh at the Tortoise;
  • The Bunny, because he was so over-confident, made silly decisions during the race – during the race he stopped to get something to eat, and after that, he actually took a nap under a tree;
  • The Bunny didn’t even think about checking where the Tortoise was during the race – he was completely oblivious to anything going on around him;
  • The Bunny lost all focus during the race;
  • The Bunny allowed himself to become very distracted during the race;
  • The Bunny took too many breaks during the race.

This is why the Tortoise WON the race:

  • The Tortoise was not afraid to accept a challenge;
  • The Tortoise did not run away when the other ‘people’ mocked him when he accepted the challenge;
  • The Tortoise believed that he was capable of participating in the race;
  • The Tortoise was realistic about his abilities – he knew he was slower, BUT, he also knew that he had more perseverance than the Bunny;
  • The Tortoise knew that in order to finish the race (never mind win the race) that he had to believe in himself;
  • The Tortoise did not take the other competitor (the Bunny) for granted;
  • The Tortoise did not allow himself to lose focus during the race;
  • The Tortoise did not allow himself to quit during the race ;
  • The Tortoise had perseverance.

Perseverance

In life, one of the greatest skills to have is perseverance.

Perseverance is directly linked to success:

Another way of understanding perseverance is by the attitude of never giving up – no matter what.

Awaken Your Fire

Hi there everybody,

Just a very quick message to all of you:

You are not lost

All that is gold does NOT glitter,

Not all those who wander are LOST;

The old that is strong does NOT wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ASHES a FIRE shall be WOKEN,

A light from the SHADOWS shall spring;

RENEWED shall be blade that WAS BROKEN,

The crownless again shall be KING.

Take care of yourselves and have a great weekend!

Achieving your Goals

All of us have goals in life.

images

Whether you have goals that are small or goals that are big, the fact remains that achieving personal goals is really important.

Some tips on how to achieve your goals:

images (6)

Tip 1: Write down every goal that you have.

images (1)

One of the steps that can lead you toward the road to success is for you to jot down every single goal you have created. Whether what you have is a short term goal or a long term goal, it is essential that you write each one down in a journal or a notebook.

Why?

Well, once you have your goals written down, you tend to become more committed to achieving personal goals that you’ve penned.

images

Goals you have scribbled also mean that you can check on them from time to time. Thus, it is very much unlikely for you to forget all those aims or aspirations. Of course, not forgetting a goal eventually leads to being able to achieve your goal.

Tip 2: Don’t lose sight of goals

images (7)

Always keep yourself focused and motivated – in other words, don’t lose sight of the ‘finish line’. If you don’t concentrate on reaching your aims, how can you expect to be on your way to the road to success? It is best that you check your journal from time to time, or place something on the mirror e.g. a post it, or a photo, or display something on your desk that reminds you of your aspirations; doing that will surely remind you of why achieving personal goals is important.

Tip 3: Pat yourself on the back when you’ve accomplished something.

images (3)

Making it a tradition to celebrate whatever goal you’ve accomplished is part of the strategies of how you can be successful. By knowing how important it is to pat yourself on the back or doing things to reward yourself when you deserve it, you won’t get tired of striving hard to reach goals. For instance, if you were able to cross out one or two things from your list of goals, treat yourself to a new phone, handbag or to a movie as that practice will help you look forward more to journeying on the road to success.

True, achieving personal goals may not be as easy as some people would like to believe. By following these simple tips, though, you’re sure to find it less hard to achieve your goal.

Good luck!

Liberate Yourself

Be Free

Our Deputy President, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa made a speech at a youth dialogue that was hosted by the South African Youth Council. Mr Ramaphosa made some really interesting comments in his speech:

  • Young people need to be educated and that they must be innovative in order to achieve economic freedom in their lifetime.

  • It is up to young people  to take up all the opportunities in education and in business that are available to them.

You should seek economic freedom in your lifetime … Seek those opportunities so that you can be empowered.

We want people to be their own liberators.

These are some really powerful words. Really powerful.

He also said that young people should prioritise education as education is the only way to liberate themselves from the social ills of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

In South Africa, words such as ‘freedom’ and ‘liberation’ mean all sorts of things. We have a history full of amazing stories of fighting for freedom. We have so many heroes who died in the pursuit of freedom. In South Africa, we cannot take freedom for granted.

I think that most of us want to be ‘free’ – and, for most of us, we understand ‘freedom’ differently.

Are you free?

What does freedom mean to you?

Do you know what you need to do to become more free?

What have you done to liberate yourself?

I would not be working at College SA if I did not believe and know that education is essential to becoming more free. Education is NOT only for clever and rich people. Education is not just a nice-to-have. Education is a MUST HAVE.

At College SA we believe in giving people second / third / fourth chances at education. We believe in offering a variety of courses that will make a real difference in a person’s life.  We believe in guaranteeing our Students that we will support them every step of the way with their studies.

At College SA we want to help you with your educational dreams.

But … and this is very important, YOU must have a DREAM. YOU must have GOALS.

YOU must want to be FREE.

Do you want to be free? What does freedom mean to you? Have you done even just 1 thing today that shows, without a doubt, that you want to be free?

Be Free

What is is interesting is that freedom can be scary. Because, being free means you have responsibilities. It means that you are in charge of making decisions for yourself and for your life. Being free often means that you must be a warrior in your own life. It is not always easy being free.

But, being free is what we should all aim for.
