One of the many things I love about working at College SA

Hi there Readers, hope you are all doing well. Today I’d like to give you a bit of an insider’s peek into College SA. Read on to find out one of the many things that I love about working at College SA.

One thing I do know for sure is …..

When I get to work every day, the office will never, ever look (and feel) like this:

Not College SA

College SA is anything but dull and grey. The people who work at College SA are anything but dull and grey.

My colleagues at College SA are nothing like the picture above. A more accurate picture would be:

College SA

I love working at College SA because we have some truly unique and amazing people here.  To use too many cliches, College SA is a rainbow nation of a bunch of fruit loops in a big box of chocolates. We have all types here. The one thing that we have in common – we are passionate about College SA and about our students.

Let me tell you a bit more about some of the people here (names have been changed to protect the identity and ego of staff members):

1) The charming geeks / nerds / techies (they really are precious):

Our Geeks

Don’t get me wrong. We love our Geeks. They use fancy and ‘foreign’ words and phrases such as “404 Error”; “RAM”; “MpS”.  It’s so charming and we really think the world of our Geeks. Being friends with a Geek has many benefits – they are the first people you run to if your computer starts exploding. They seem to know all the handy tricks. Here’s a shout out to our precious Geeks!!

2) The no-nonsense types:

The no-nonsense types tend to be quite serious. They stick to their to-do lists and they make sure that nothing ever goes wrong in their departments. These sergeants take the welfare of our students very seriously and we all know not to mess with these endearing people. You can always go to a no-nonsense type for a solution to a problem. They are all about strategy and performance. Here’s a salute to our no-nonsense types that teach us so many valuable lessons. By the way, some of them also monitor our in-house gang plank which overlooks the charming babbling Bellville South brook. Staff members often take their lunch breaks at the banks of the brook, nibbling on their cucumber sandwiches and throwing bread crusts at the magnificent swans in the brook. Departments sometimes have picnics there, sharing peppermints and singing folk songs together (but that’s a different story altogether).

3) The clever ones

We love our little ‘brainiacs’. Gosh, our clever friends are just brilliant. You can ask them absolutely anything and they will be able to give you an answer in 2.5 seconds. Need to know the meaning of a word? Find a clever person. They are brilliant at researching all sorts of things. They know how to do anything. They sit at their desks and they tolerate the questions from us lesser mortals. It’s a really good idea to make friends with a clever person. Apart from being really smart, our clever people put their intelligence into action at the college. These clever folk are positively inspirational. The nice ones even don’t mind lending us their reference books.

4) The cool people

We have so many cool and suave people at College SA. They always look and smell good. They teach us about what to wear and how to look fabulous. They walk around with a stylish swagger and they are like moving artworks in our office. These are the people that we use to answer our door (just kidding). Unlike at high school, our cool people are not cruel and snobbish. Our cool people don’t mind mingling with the less-than-cool. These people don’t just look cool, they are cool. They have cool cars, cool friends and cool weekends. They drink coffee out of cool cups and they even make a peanut butter sandwich look cool. Our cool people answer the phone with their cool voices and they impart their coolness to our students. We love you, cool people!

5) The arty and funky people:

We have a special place in our hearts for our unique and funky people. They bring colour and creativity to the College. They are outside-the-box thinkers that see the world a little differently. Brainstorming with them is always fun and productive. Invite an arty and creative person to a meeting and there will be lots of laughter and lots different perspectives. Our funky friends inspire us not to get stuck in rigid ways of thinking. They work passionately and intensely. Being friends with a funky ensures that you can share in their amazing selection of sweets and other goodies that they have on their desks. The funky folk come up with the greatest ideas for staff social events and we have them to thank for making the college look better than a standard work environment. They’re different and we love them! Some of these folk have really interesting hobbies, and being friends with them gives you a good chance of getting samples of their artistic crafts. They love to share their latest doily designs, their home-made scented paper, their peanut butter, banana, fudge, pecan and diabetes-laden muffins. They are just wonderful!

6) The workaholics:

Our dear and devoted colleagues that always look like they haven’t slept in years. Our workaholic colleagues work late into the night, typing away on their computers. They are always busy with a million projects and they will only leave their desks if there is a national emergency. The workaholics consider the college to be their home and don’t ever mention the word ‘job’ in front of them – for them, what they do is not a job, it is a lifestyle! These workaholics also tend to be big drinkers of coffee or other energy drinks. If you want to truly upset a workaholic then try hiding the coffee from them! Our workaholics are passionate about what they do and they will never say no to helping out wherever they are needed. Sending work emails at 4AM is normal for them and so is working over the weekend. Our workaholics are precious to us and we do our best to look after them (coffee always works!).

7) The Unusuals:

Ahh, bless! Our unusuals are exactly that – unusual. They walk to the beat of their own drums and they bring a certain charm to those around them. An unusual will come up with really out-there suggestions that could actually work. They have vasts amount of knowledge gained from their years of communing with ferns in sweat lodges in Jamaica. An unusual is always a benefit to have around – you can have the most amazing conversations with them. An unusual will know where you can buy glow in the dark artificial grass for the very reason that they have that grass all over their bathrooms at home. An unusual is someone to cherish, and, here at College SA, we do our very best to cherish them.

I love working at College SA because things here are never dull. I have a great bunch of people around me that share their knowledge and expertise openly and generously. It’s a blessing to be surrounded by truly interesting people. If I’m feeling tired or glum I know that there will be somebody to brighten my day.

Pearls of wisdom from some of my colleagues:

  • Sculpie clay is not a dirty word;
  • You can’t wear brown socks with black shoes;
  • Spelunking is not for the fainthearted;
  • The CIA is out to get everybody;
  • You get such a thing known as a drunken duck;
  • It’s okay to fold up your friends and put them in your pockets;
  • It is not politically correct to call somebody a midget;
  • Spongebob artifacts are cool;
  •  I replace your version of reality.

I know that this has been a long article and I thank you for your patience. Remember that we are blessed by the people around us. College SA Rocks!
